The way this soldering iron works is by using 2 carbon electrodes which are closely spaced on the tip. You turn it on, and it doesn't heat up until you short the 2 electrodes at the tip with what you are soldering. At this point, it works like a mini arc welder and heats up the solder. The gap is about 1/32nd of an inch which makes it difficult to do pin-point work (because it doesn't have a point). If you can't short the electrodes at the tip, it doesn't produce heat, so you have to work at it to keep the electrical contact. I didn't like this at first, but I got the hang of it. I tried desoldering components and it seemed to work fine. I also tried desoldering wick and that also appeared to work. It was difficult trying to tin a wire because you have to put the solder between the gap to get it to melt and you just can't leave the iron on the wire to heat it up. So while it may work for most things, there are some things you will have to use your old fashioned soldering iron for. The tips seem rather fragile. I would be worried about damaging it since it only appears to be a carbon rod.
