(More customer reviews)Most cheap soldering irons are total crud. This iron isn't as well made as the more expensive Weller irons, but it is better than anything else I've seen under $20. The indicator light in the handle is a nice touch.
It comes in a bulk pack plastic bag and the only thing included is the conical soldering tip. The sheet metal stand shown in the photo is not included. For most people buying their first soldering iron, the full SP23LK kit would be a much better choice since it includes accessories a beginner would need.
If you buy one, unscrew the tip and put it back on before you use it. This will make it easier to replace the tip later on.
But I am pissed off at Amazon. I bought this iron to check it out before recommending it to others. I was going to recommend it and even buy a few more when I saw Amazon start jerking the price around. In the past couple months, the price has changed from a low of under $6 to a high of about $14. And it appears to change EVERY week. Amazon's pricing on the SP23LK kit is more reasonable. But I recommended people to buy the Weller at their local Home Depot instead.
Some of the people who reviewed the SP23LK kit weren't happy with it. Many of them bought the wrong soldering iron for the job. Weller sells Marksman series irons rated from 12 watts to 80 watts. This is the 25 watt model. It is made for printed circuit board work. It was designed to produce enough heat to do PCB connections while still being safe on heat sensitive components. If you're soldering connectors with heavy gauge wire, you're not going to be happy with 25 watts. On the other hand, someone who tries to use an 80 watt iron on a printed circuit board is probably going to cook a component or two. Soldering stations can adjust their temperature to suit the task, but these cheap irons don't.
