This is a high quality unit. The temperature controls on the soldering iron are very accurate, and the air flow is more than adequate.
The air flow dials are labeled 1-8 for both heat and air flow. I did a couple experiments to give myself a feel for the settings before attempting to use it on a real board:
- with the air flow midway (4/8), hold a piece of solder in front of the nozzle and turn the heat dial up waiting about 10 seconds per increment until the solder melts. For me, 60/40 solder with a melting point of 340f melted at about 3/8 on the heat dial.
- using a scrap of junk pcb, experiment with different heat and air flow settings and see how long it takes to burn / bubble the pcb. This exercise gives you a feel for how long it takes to ruin a board :)
- after some experimentation, I found that 4/8 on each dial was just right to desolder SMT components from some old boards I had lying around
- 2/8 heat and 6/8 air works great for heat shrink tubing
The hand iron is controlled with a dial marked with temperature in c/f. For me the dial was extremely accurate. Set to the low setting (392f) it heats up enough to melt my 340 solder in about 20 seconds.
